This diploma thesis examines the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum Vienna as a postwar modernist system-built structure and develops an architectural strategy of continued construction. Central to the work is the question of how a large scale educational building from the 1960s and 1970s can be transformed in a way that preserves its constructive and spatial logic while simultaneously responding to changed pedagogical, social, and climatic requirements. The thesis first illuminates the historical and theoretical foundations. Systembuilding and postwar modernism are analysed as both an architectural and societal phenomenon; the TGM is described in terms of its construction and use history and assessed from a heritage conservation perspective. Sociological perspectives on space sharpen the view of the building as a social field of action, in which belonging and collective identity are spatially anchored. From this foundation, a design is developed that conceives of the TGM as a learning-capable system. The structural robustness and serial order of the existing building are understood as a resource. Targeted interventions in floor plan organization, circulation, facade, and building services are derived from the systemiclogic of the building. New learning landscapes and a reorganization of communal areas translate contemporary pedagogical concepts into architectural form, without erasing the building's accumulated history.
