Abstract:
In this talk, explanatory means of Åqvist's systems, a family of preference-based deontic logics, are discussed on the basis of some legal examples. It is observed that the systems generate certain undesirable explanations. To solve this issue, an explicit distinction in the systems is made between the norms that pertain to ideal situations and those that are triggered only in the presence of particular facts. Explanations should then also reflect this distinction. For that purpose, a new modality is introduced and its logic is investigated.
