Abstract:

The thesis examines the development potential of Berlin’s urban fringe in the context of the ongoing housing crisis and the transition toward sustainable mobility. It is based on the assumption that areas with strong public transport connections are particularly attractive places to live, resulting in increasing development pressure on well-connected inner-city districts. In order to address the housing shortage in the long term, outer districts must therefore be better connected to efficient rail-based public transport systems and further developed in an urban context. The study focuses on the southwest of Berlin along the long-discussed extension of the U9 subway line. Along four potential station locations, an area of approximately 6 km2 is defined that could benefit from the expansion of public transport infrastructure and its resulting development potential. Based on an analysis of the existing urban structure, both the current urban density and the capacity for further densification are examined. Different building typologies are considered alongside the capacities of social, public, and green infrastructure required to enable sustainable and high-quality urban development. Building upon these investigations, strategies are developed to promote sustainable mobility, strengthen public space, and support urban densification. Finally, two areas surrounding potentialsubway stations are explored in greater spatial detail and translated into concrete urban designproposals. The projects are intended as exemplary starting points for a long-term transformation of Berlin’s urban fringe toward more connected, vibrant, and urban neighborhoods.
