Abstract:

This thesis examines social inequalities, environmental challenges and urbanisation processes in the Brazilian Amazon region. The focus is on the city of Manaus and the indigenous settlement of Parque das Tribos. The starting pointfor this work is the ongoing deforestation of the rainforest and the associated climate change, which are having a lasting impact on both ecological systems and social structures. Among other things, these developments are fuelling the ongoing migration of indigenous populations to urban areas and leading to complex social and spatial transformation processes. An analysis of Manaus’ historical development highlights the significant influence that economic processes have had on the city’s growth. In particular, the rubber boom and the establishment of the free trade zone led to periods of accelerated urbanisation and exponential population growth. The resulting structural deficits, particularly in the housing market, facilitated the emergence of numerous informal settlements, which are often characterised by inadequate infrastructure provision and precarious living conditions. Using the example of the Parque das Tribos settlement, the social, spatial and infrastructural conditions of an urban indigenouscommunity are analysed in detail. In particular, the study highlights the tensionbetween cultural identity, social exclusion and a lack of access to basic services.Based on the findings, a concept is developed that outlines possible approaches for inclusive and sustainable urban development. The aim is to formulate strategies that take into account the needs of the affected population and incorporate the sensitive ecological context of the Amazon region.
