Schule weiterdenken : ein Bestand als Ressource

Abstract

Architektur ist stets Ausdruck der gesellschaftlichen, technischen und kulturellen Bedingungen ihrer Zeit. Besonders deutlich zeigt sich dies an den Bauten der Nachkriegsmoderne, die heute unter erheblichem Druck stehen. Leerstand, bauliche Mängel und ein gestiegener Raumbedarf prägen den gegenwärtigen Umgang mit dem Gebäudebestand der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre. Die architektonische Qualität und ihre Rolle in der Baugeschichte werden hierbei oft vernachlässigt. Auch die Volksschule Braunau-Neustadt aus dem Jahr 1974 stellt sich aktuell diesen Herausforderungen. Die Schule, welche dem damals häufig gebauten Typus der Hallenschule zugehörig ist und im Stil des Brutalismus erbaut wurde, zeichnet sich durch ein modulares System aus seriell gefertigten Fassadenelementen aus. Infolge des gestiegenen Raumbedarfs und beträchtlicher bauphysikalischer und baulicher Mängel läuft die Schule jedoch Gefahr, abgerissen zu werden oder durch einen Umbau völlig überformt zu werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde von der Gemeinde Braunau 2025 ein zweistufiger Realisierungswettbewerb abgehalten. Diese Arbeit versteht sich als alternatives Konzept für die bestehende Bauaufgabe und widmet sich der Weiterentwicklung des Schulgebäudes.Die Arbeit gliedert sich in zwei aufeinander aufbauende Teile. Der erste Teil legt die theoretischen Grundlagen: Er untersucht das Bauen im Bestand im Kontext der Denkmalpflege, zeichnet die Entwicklung des modernen Schulbaus nach und analysiert das Gebäude selbst, seine Konstruktion, seine Raumstruktur und die gestalterische Bedeutung der Farbe Orange als identitätsstiftendes Element der Anlage. Der zweite Teil überführt diese Grundlagen in einen konkreten Entwurfsprozess. Ausgehend von einem partizipativen Verfahren, einer Zukunftswerkstatt mit Schüler*innen, Lehrkräften und der Schulleitung, werden Schwächen, Potenziale und Besonderheiten der Schule sichtbar gemacht. Auf dieser Basis entsteht ein Sanierungs- und Erweiterungskonzept, das den funktionalen Anforderungen eines zeitgemäßen Schulbetriebs gerecht wird, die vorhandenen architektonischen Qualitäten respektiert und die besondere Bedeutung des Gebäudes für die Bildungsarchitektur der 1970er-Jahre würdigt. Der Entwurf denkt bestehende Strukturen weiter, optimiert den Marktplatz und die Erschließung und schafft neue Lern- und Aufenthaltsräume, ergänzt durch eine Aufstockung, die die Ganztagsschule als gleichwertigen Bestandteil des Schulbetriebs räumlich verankert.Die Arbeit zeigt, wie ein sensibler Umgang mit dem Bestand möglich ist, und macht die Volksschule Braunau-Neustadt zu einem Beispiel für verantwortungsvolles Weiterbauen von Systembauten der Nachkriegsmoderne zu einem Ort, der nicht nur Bildung vermittelt, sondern auch die Geschichte und Identität der Architektur dieser Epoche lebendig hält.Diese Diplomarbeit entstand im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Themendiploms Erhalten & Fortschreiben - Umgang mit Systembauten der 1960er und 1970er Jahre. Den Arbeiten ist ein Gemeinschaftsteil mit Beiträgen aller Teilnehmer:innen des Diplomseminars im Anhang beigefügt. Dieser behandelt allgemeine und für alle Arbeiten relevante Aspekte im Zusammenhang mit Systembauten der späten Nachkriegsmoderne.

Architecture is always an expression of the social, technical and cultural conditions of its time. This is particularly evident in the buildings of post-war modernism, which today face considerable pressure. Vacancy, structural deficiencies and increased spatial demands characterise the current approach to the building stock of the 1960s and 1970s. The architectural quality of these buildings and their role in the history of architecture are frequently overlooked in this process. The Volksschule Braunau-Neustadt, built in 1974, is currently confronted with precisely these challenges. The school belongs to the hall-type school typology that was widely built at the time and was constructed in the Brutalist style, distinguished by a modular system of serially manufactured façade elements. Due to increased spatial demands and considerable building-physical and structural deficiencies, the school is at risk of demolition or of being entirely transformed beyond recognition through renovation. Against this background, the municipality of Braunau held a two-stage open competition in 2025. This thesis presents an alternative concept for the existing design brief and is dedicated to the further development of the school building.The thesis is structured in two interconnected parts. The first part establishes the theoretical foundations: it examines building within existing structures in the context of heritage preservation, traces the development of modern school architecture and analyses the building itself, its construction, its spatial organisation and the significance of the colour orange as an identity-forming element of the complex. The second part translates these foundations into a concrete design process. Drawing on a participatory procedure, a future workshop conducted with pupils, teachers and the school principal, the weaknesses, potentials and particular qualities of the school are identified. On this basis, a renovation and extension concept is developed that meets the functional requirements of a contemporary school, respects the existing architectural qualities and acknowledges the significance of the building for the educational architecture of the 1970s. The design carries existing structures forward, optimises the marketplace hall and the circulation, and creates new learning and communal spaces, complemented by an additional storey that spatially anchors the all-day school as an integral part of school life.The thesis demonstrates how a sensitive approach to existing buildings is possible, and establishes the Volksschule Braunau-Neustadt as an example of responsible continuation of post-war modernist system buildings, as a place that not only provides education but also keeps the history and identity of the architecture of this era alive.This thesis was written as part of the interdisciplinary diploma seminar Erhalten & Fortschreiben, Umgang mit Systembauten der 1960er und 1970er Jahre (Preserving & Continuing, Approaches to System Buildings of the 1960s and 1970s). The theses are accompanied by a shared section in the appendix containing contributions from all participants of the diploma seminar. This section addresses general aspects relevant to all theses in the context of system buildings of the late post-war modernist period.
