Abstract:

The multi-storey car park is a built relic of the car-oriented city and today stands as an example of monofunctional infrastructure that is steadily losing relevance in dense inner-city contexts. Although centrally located, it remains largely socially invisible in everyday urban life and thus appears as a blind spot within the cityscape. Against the background of the climate crisis, the mobility transition, and growing pressure on land and housing, the question arises as to how such existing structures can be addressed in the future. This diploma thesis examines the listed multi-storey car park at Herrlichkeit / Rödingsmarkt in Hamburg as a case study. Constructed in the post-war period and shaped by the guiding principles of automotive modernism, the building is understood as a spatial and structural resource whose potential lies in the further development of the inner city.Based on an investigation of the site’s urban-historical context, heritage protection, building typology, and current urban development strategies in Hamburg, the project develops a design proposal that transforms the existing car park into a mixed-use building. Housing, theatre, theatre school, gastronomy, and communal uses are inserted into the existing structure and linked with new spatial qualities. The aim of the thesis is to understand the multi-storey car park not only as a problem of the past, but as an opportunity for a new form of urban life. Its transformation thus becomes both a contribution to a resource-conscious approach to the existing built fabric and a vision for a lively, mixed-use inner city.
