Abstract:

Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a highly sensitive and selective method for trace gas detection. To control spectrometers we need data acquisition (DAQ) cards, but standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) DAQ cards often lack the channel capacity and real-time processing bandwidth required when multiple lasers have to be controlled to measure multiple gases. This thesis addresses this limitation by presenting the development and implementation of a custom Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based DAQ card designed to enable practical, portable multi-gas spectroscopy systems. The hardware provides six 14-bit, 65 MHz analog inputs and six 16-bit, 250 MHz outputs, controlled by a FPGA. A key feature is the modular amplifier stage for laser and photodiode signals, allowing the integration of various photodiode and laser module types by enabling stage replacement. The architecture enables simultaneous control of up to six lasers and photodiodes with real-time spectral averaging at 2 kHz on the FPGA, improving signal-to-noise ratio by a factor of 1.4 and eliminating host PC bandwidth constraints, compared to a COTS DAQ card. It was successfully integrated into an existing spectrometer at TU Wien, which previously measured CO2, CH4, CO, N2O, and H2O. The performance and functionality were validated through Allan variance analysis, calibration measurements, and field testing with air samples in Vienna. At a 1 Hz output rate, the instrument achieves 1 sigma precision of 1.19 ppb (CH4), 5.18 ppm (H2O), 492.8 ppb (CO2), 0.316 ppb (CO), and 0.293 ppb (N2O), demonstrating real-time environmental and industrial process monitoring. The expanded six-channel capability enables the addition of a new laser module for measuring N2O isotopomers as well as NO and NO2 concentrations.
