Abstract:

The state and development of the education system is one of the premier topics of today's public dialogue. In Austria it is an especially important issue at the moment, since the education system is currently in a rebuilding phase. This development can be seen as a reaction to the variety of new findings concerning pedagogy and learning behavior of students, which emerged in recent years. The role of Architecture can be seen as to participate in and advance the discourse by revision of existing school typologies as well as development of new ones as a reaction to the changing requirements. This master thesis deals with the current tendencies in schools design, including aspects of urban planning, neutrality of use, expendability and procedures within a single school building. The goal is the development of a simulation-based application to support architects in the early stages of planning school buildings. The paper is divided in various, consecutive steps. Initially, the current situation of the education system as well as existing papers and prototypes in the field of computer-based planning-tools are examined. Afterwards the idea behind the application and its implementation are explained. The software provides assistance for planers on various layers, from the determination of the need for additional educational buildings of a region to the planning of individual schools. For that the processes in schools are used as base data for the creation of adjacency-diagrams showing the complex spatial relationships between the various functional units within school buildings. This is accomplished by analyzing the paths of students during a typical school day or full week of school using agent- based simulation. The resulting adjacency-diagrams serve as source material for the generation of recommendations for the arrangement of the functional units on floors. In the last step, the application is utilized for the examination of the projected increase of the number of classrooms for the city of Vienna until the year 2030. Eventually, the tool is applied to demonstrate the spatial relationships of the areas of activity in the ongoing competition for the construction of "Bildungscampus Nordbahnhof". This competition follows the trend of placing various school types on one construction site to facilitate interconnectivity, communication and multiple use.
