Abstract:

This thesis tries to contribute to the more aesthetic design of noise barriers based on the subject-matters ornament, pattern and structure. The theoretical part of this thesis starts with a thorough analysis of relevant terms and definitions. The terms ornament, architectural ornament, decoration, pattern, symbol, etc. are discussed with the help of literature from art history and architectural theory. The development from the classical ornament and pattern to current surface phenomena is shown with several examples. These phenomena are known as new or digital ornament in the field of architecture. The different examples are discussed in relation to the different design and production methods of the respective era. To complete the theoretical part, several positions and views of architectural theory are presented. In the second part of this thesis, design solutions for noise protection walls made from concrete are developed. The building site is located along a highway in Carinthia in the South of Austria. Currently existing noise barriers show a monotone picture. As shape and aesthetics only play a minor role at the moment, this thesis focuses on enhancing this artistically dull area with new formal-aesthetic qualities. This is done with the help of digital design and production methods. The developed artistic design concepts combine sound-absorbing with aesthetic functions and consider - in contrast to exiting systems - also the perception of the noise protection wall while being in motion. The noise protection walls are not designed for being viewed from the front but consider the sideways view of people that pass by with high speed in their cars. The developed walls consist of modules with a varying pattern and consider the respective surroundings. This helps to strengthen the identity of the track section, to develop a harmonic connection between the structure and the landscape and to create a landmark with recognition value for the whole region.
