Abstract:

From a socio-cultural point of view, the city of Bratislava has enjoyed a flourishing boom in recent decades. First associations with the city are the historic castle, the old town with the well-known opera house and the famous bridge, which connects the old city structure with the area south of the Danube. The dissertation ‚A library in Bratislava‘ includes an exploration of the librarys history with the goal to create a place for wisdom and the acquisition of knowledge. The search for the right location has taken me to a place of remembrance, which has changed significantly due to political decisions and was deprived of its ancient role. The library‘s concept is changing due to digitization and the rapid gain of knowledge through the Internet. The storage and provision of literature and importance of analog working will still be important in the future. As a result, the seemingly profane building takes on a new significance - it creates a peaceful space for encounter and exchange. The search for a place of deceleration is one of the consistent issues of today. The works goal is a confrontation with the task of the construction of the library and the preservation and conservation and provision of literature. In addition, the construction site raised the question of the role of new architecture over the established structure. The reader should take a questioning look at the task of ‚building in historical surroundings‘ and the question ‚How far heritage conservation should go‘.
