The city of Vienna is confronted with a rapid population growth: According to prognosis the city will have two million inhabitants by 2026, which corresponds to a yearly growth of 15.000 people. The biggest part of this increase will take place in the Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. The Donau City is a relatively new urban area within the 22nd district, which lacks significant cultural use. Though it was originally promised that 8-10% of the area should be used by cultural or recreational facilities, hardly any of these buildings were built. All past efforts to improve this situation failed, even though there is an attrictive site with roughly 10.000m² in size reserved for these very functions – the „Kulturfläche“. This master thesis aims to design a hybrid building on this specific site, that combines housing and culture, makes an improvement to the whole neighbourhood and counteracts with its functional density the issue of increasing space de-mands within a limited city area.
