Umnutzung der ehemaligen Messehalle in Dornbirn zu einer Mediathek mit Coworking Space

Abstract

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der 1953 errichteten Messehalle am südwestlichen Rande des Dornbirner Stadtzentrums. Die über 6.000 m2 große Halle diente nicht nur der Messe als Ausstellungsfläche, sondern auch als Konzerthaus und war Austragungsort unzähliger Großveranstaltungen. Heute, über 60 Jahre später, ist der Glanz der Halle verblasst und durch diverse Umbauarbeiten im Innen- wie auch Außenbereich merklich verändert worden. Derzeit beherbergt das Gebäude im vorderen Teil verschiedene Kultureinrichtungen, im großen Saal wird Rollhockey gespielt und auf der Galerie sind provisorische Klassenräume eingerichtet. Das Untergeschoss dient als Lagerfläche. Mit der Umnutzung des Gebäudes in eine Mediathek und Coworking Space soll zum Einen das Potenzial der Halle wieder voll ausgeschöpft, zum Anderen ein innerstädtischer, konsumfreier Anziehungspunkt geschaffen werden. Diese Arbeit kann auch als Gegenentwurf zum aktuell laufenden Architekturwettbewerb zur Erweiterung der benachbarten Dornbirner Stadtbücherei durch einen Neubau verstanden werden. Die Umgestaltung der angrenzenden Verkehrs- und Aufenthaltsfläche stellt einen zusätzlichen Teil der Arbeit dar.

This Master Thesis deals with the exhibition hall that was built in 1953 and is located at the south western part of Dornbirn city center. The hall, which spans an area of 6.000 m2, was formerly used for exhibitions, as concert hall and was the scene of various big events. Today, more than 60 years later, the glamour of the hall has faded and various renovations have changed the inner and outer appearance of the building. Currently, the front part of the building is used by cultural institutions, the main hall contains a skating ground and the gallery is temporarily used for teaching purposes. The basement serves as a storage room. The conversion of the former exhibition hall into a Mediatheque and Coworking Space will not only tap the hall's full potential but create a consumption free attraction within the city. This work can also be read as a counter draft to the current architecture competition for the expansion of the Dornbirn city library. An additional part of the thesis is the redesign of the adjacent circulation and communication area.
