Abstract:

The work deals with unfinished buildings in the Slovakian capital Bratislava. This architectural documentation shows buildings, which have never been finished, partly for legal but mainly for financial reasons. Nowadays many of these areas have become run down, littered and overgrown. Whether it´s because of corruption, mismanagement, poor planning or financial crash, the following overview documents these buildings within their context and analyzes them in terms of their present involvement in the urban environment. At the beginning a historical review describes the general image of ruins and their aestheticization. From the ancient to the artificial ruin, all these remains have a positive connotation and we perceive them as monuments of former greatness. On the contrary we consider the ''unmeant" unfinished building as a negative Monument. Ruins as a result of speculation symbolize the waste of resources. Worldwide these "modern ruins" are no exceptional phenomenon anymore. On the basis of references the current situation will be illustrated. The works focus is a detailed study of the abandoned buildings of Bratislava. Even if they have never been handed over to the public in their completed state, some of them are in use differently. All these side effects are to be mentioned, in order to think about the future perspectives of these buildings. Should we regard them as potential resources or merely as monuments, which make us aware of the present?
