Smartphones are an essential part of childrens and teenagers life. They spend a lot of time in organization their social lives with it. However the usage of smartphones in school is often seen as problematic since in most part of school there is no space for them because teachers might register them as a distraction or disruption which is logically not desired. Due to this there's coming up a discussion about the total prohibition of smartphones in school. Most pupils nowadays are so called "digital natives" who grew up with digital media. Therefore the usage of digital media as addional teaching method to the conventional teaching methods has shown as in the last years. Especially for unpopular subjects, such as mathematics, digital media can help teachers to bring playful mathematical concepts into their classrooms. For these subjects it would be a great idea to provide a better access to them by using stuff like serious games. For example, mathematics is probably the most unliked subject. Although it provides the basics of many today used technologies mathematics has still a bad reputation. For this purpose a mobile application were developed to integrate the smartphones meaningful into school as well as increasing their interest on route problems and -optimization. This mobile android application tracks the covered distance with GPS-technology, show ways on a map and offers a possibility to be in a competition with others. The app should learn practical abilities and theoretic aspects of the problems which are tested in the part of the learning questions. A pre-test and post-test were used to verify if test persons had a better understanding in solving parts of route problems. The result shows that the understanding of the testers with respect to the hamiltonpathproblem and the travelling salesman problem seems better due to the use of the mobile application. In summary it can be said the application offers teachers two different possibilities during their lectures. It could either be used to give pupils an introduction into a new topic or seen as a reward during the lessons for performing given tasks. The mobile application offers a very good possibility to complement the traditional education with new motivating digital elements.
