Abstract:

The project area is on the Danube Canal side of Vienna-s 2nd District, directly before the Franzensbru-cke. On Un- tere Donaustrasse a new access to the lower quay of the Danube Canal was made in the form of barrier-free ramp. In summer months there is a spectator stand on the quay and at water level a floating counterpart with two poten- tial ancillary stages. During the day these stages can be used for sunbathing. This recreational landscape is aug- mented by a picnic meadow that is surrounded by a con- tinuous bench seat and is raised to the level of this seating. The Danube Canal represents an incision in the urban mesh. The different levels are connected by staircases and ramps. The new ramp augments the existing system that was de- signed by architect and urban planner of Vienna, Otto Wag- ner. The Danube Canal is signalled at street level by means of a cafe raised above the front quay on three steel columns. In the project area as a whole, there is a view of St Stephen-s Cathedral and the Urania from the cafe-, the viewing plat- form, the ramp, the picnic meadow, and the stage/stand.
