Abstract:

Due to the gradual disappearance of small and local forms of production in which consumers once had direct influence on the formation of objects, production processes nowadays could not be surveyed by customers anymore and things seem to be prepaired as if by magic. In the way things are produced, traded and used it seems that they already have taken control of our everyday life. Has this Aufstand der Dinge already happened? Have those things, unnoticed by their customers, already taken control over the way we think and act? The first part of this work is stressing the history of the production of things, their consumation and the change of how we perceive things in everyday life. The second part focusses on a direct alteraction with things with the aim of developing a methodology for a new way on seeing things. In addition, some of this new objects will be presented. This work should provide a new and different approach on how things could be produced and consumed. This should not be archieved by a recurring purchase of more sustainable and environmentally friendly produced things, but in a recurring reconfiguration of things out of parts of no longer wanted products: a metabolism of the things. The personal engagement of customers, for example in recognizing the unwanted , broken and socially defined waste (see M.Thompson, The Ethics of Waste) as a chance and basis for the creation of something new, as a potential for an emancipation of the individual to a larger and more abstract industry and as a chance of emancipation of creativity and intuition of a re encouraged craft community against a generated and controlled consumer behavior.
