Marchgraber, J. (2019).

The rapid development of transport in the last century led to a revolution in speed, an endless race against time. The development of traffic, consumer and communication spaces, the enormous growth of hotel chains, shopping centres and transit facilities, led in the last decade to an explosive spread of so-called non-places. The airport is probably the largest transit point of our time and thus an important example of a non-place. The topic of this work is an examination of the concept of the non-place using the example of Vienna International Airport. The developmental historical investigation is first divided into three main parts, in which a retrospective, present and future investigation and discussion of Vienna International Airport takes place in all its phases. This is followed by an explanation of the term non-place according to Marc Augé in the context of architectural theory. What is a non-place and how does it differ from a place? Literary works are used to explain the concepts and points of contact. In the course of the investigation, the insights gained will be examined and the research results will be presented.
