The current relevant topic of atelier spaces- shortage for architecture students at the Technical University of Vienna constitutes the main focus of this diploma project. Its aim is to solve this problem, by expanding the TU campus underground - next to the Karlsplatz and towards the Vienna State Opera. In doing so, a direct view of the opera is made possible and a better visual and structural integration of the Karlsplatz with the city center and its historical buildings is achieved. The new campus structure emerges underground next to the Karlsplatz-passage and the Wien river and envisions an over ground extension of the Resselpark green area. This new -central park- and its newly created underground functional and interconnected space, not only allows for an increase of the University-s capacity but also serves as a recreational area for students, staff and visitors. The concept, which originates from a functional and quantitative deficiency, envisages an expansion and enrichment of the location, from an urban point of view, and is part of a higher-level, multifunctional context, which aims at combining in a practical and efficient manner different types of utilization and leads to an added value for its users. Not only the design presents an elaborate suggested solution on an urban level, but also ventures into details and provides answers for its smaller-scale structures such as the students- working spaces. These are laid out modularly and can be modified and adapted according to individual needs and different working scenarios. Ultimately the project can be regarded as an attempt to bridge educational and cultural faculties. Besides providing an architectonic solution for an urban and spatial problem, it also offers to the students and visitors the benefits of a connecting central park, that brings the city center a step closer to the campus.
