dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
This paper addresses an upcoming construction project by the city of Bad Radkersburg, for which the property of the former military barracks has been made available. At the beginning of the project the zones in and around Radkersburg were analysed. The results made it clear that a good mixture of zones is missing, especially on the outskirts of the city. The barracks project therefore makes an effort to enable many different kinds of use. The new barracks district is connected with the existing properties and surrounding zones via new, direct routes to encourage a steady flow to and from the old city. The basic idea behind this linear routing is also reflected in the design of the structural elements and open spaces. The architectural landscape flows from the city out towards nature, first tall and dense, then ever more flat and airy. The reverse is true for nature. Dense and tall in the beginning, then airy and low towards the city. Thus a new city district is created with a direct connection to both the existing structures and to nature. The district is designed to appeal to a wide range of users and offers space for living, working, commerce and even tourism. The result is a new residential area with quick access to the old city, one that lies on the east side of the old city, forming a new hotspot.
