Virtuelle Rekonstruktion der Synagoge in Güssing

Abstract

Ziel und Hauptaufgabe der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit "Virtuelle Rekonstruktion der Synagoge in Güssing" ist die möglichst realitätsgetreue dreidimensionale Nachmodellierung des heute nicht mehr existierenden Tempels. Die Familie Batthyány ließ den Tempel in den Jahren 1838-1839 errichten, da vor allem an wichtigen Festtagen in dem bis dahin genutzten Betraum im Stadtmeierhof ein erheblicher Platzmangel herrschte. Nach einem 100-jährigen Bestehen wurde das Gebäude durch die Nationalsozialisten geschändet und musste eine Umwidmung zu einem Turn- und Festsaal für die Wehrmacht über sich ergehen lassen. 1953 wurde der Tempel schlussendlich abgetragen und an dessen Stelle das heute noch stehende Rathaus errichtet. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird ein geschichtlicher Abriss von der Ansiedlung bis zum Holocaust der jüdischen Kultusgemeinde in Güssing sowie der Einfluss des Adelsgeschlechts Batthyány auf den Ort beschrieben. Dabei wird unter anderem die Bevölkerungsentwicklung der Gemeinde und der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung bis zum totalen Niedergang nach dem Anschluss Österreichs an das Großdeutsche Reich geschildert. Der zweite Teil widmet sich insbesondere dem Gebetshaus selbst und beschreibt dessen historischen Werdegang und die städtebauliche Situation innerhalb des Dorfes. Des Weiteren wird der rekonstruktive Teil der Arbeit erläutert. Dabei wird das Arbeiten im dafür gewählten CAD (computer-aided design) Programm möglichst genau beschrieben um einen Einblick in die Arbeitsweise der Modellierung zu erhalten. Schlussendlich wird der Prozess der fotorealistischen Visualisierung näher gebracht. Die dabei entstandenen Schaubilder sollen das Erscheinungsbild der nicht mehr existierenden Synagoge in Güssing veranschaulichen.

The aim of the master thesis "The virtual reconstruction of the synagogue in Güssing" is a realistic three-dimensional remodeling of a temple that doesn't exist anymore. The main challenge was to construct an accurate replica of the temple, based on pictures and descriptions collected during the initial research phase of this project. The temple was built by the Batthyány family in 1838-1839 because of the lacking of space for regular attendants on important festive days which were held at the synagogue at the "Stadtmeierhof" until that time. After 100 years of existence the building was desecrated by the National Socialists during the November pogrom in 1938. After all its sacred items were burnt in front of the temple, it was rededicated into a sports- and ceremonial hall. Eventually the synagogue was demolished in 1953 and a new town hall was build instead. The first part of this thesis contains a brief historical summary of the Jewish religious community, beginning with their settlement up to the aftermath of the holocaust. Also the influence of the noble family Batthyány is described, who had a significant impact on Güssing and its population development. It also includes a short abstract of the period from the economic revival to the total downfall after Austria's "Anschluss" to the German Reich. The second part is dedicated to the synagogue itself and tells its history and the urban situation in the village. The reconstructive part and the visualization process are the main chapters of this thesis and explain in detail the work with CAD (computer-aided design) software, creating a virtual model and the rendering phase in Artlantis generating it into a photo-realistic picture. Finally, after being post processed in a graphic editor, these images should provide a good illustration how the temple could have looked like.
