My master thesis deals with the following different topics which I investigated on site in Nicaragua: earth architecture and vernacular building techniques like Taquezal the local earthquake risk, earthquake-resistant design in a general sense and the earthquake-resistant building technique Confined Masonry in particular; self-construction as necessary building practice and possibilities for participation; and construction in the context of informal settlements based on the quarter La Candelaria in Managua (Nicaragua). A best practice example in Granada (Nicaragua) combines the different focal points illustrativly in a single project. On the basis of the manifold analysis I aim at answering the following research questions within the outline of my newly developed building technique Hibrido: How could an enhancement of the building technique Taquezal look like in order to meet the requirements earthquake-resistance, sustainability and affordability economical for the self-construction of residential homes. And in what way can this new construction method be implemented into the informal urban quarter La Candelaria; according to local conditions and needs of the residents?
