Peitl, M. (2015).

In times of rising energy consumption, there must be developed environmentally friendly "energy generation" concepts. During the process of composting aerobic material heat is released, which was not used in compost work so far. A concept which extracts the heat from the process has been developed and causes that water gets heated. This concept was designed thermodynamically. An experimental reactor was planned, which should give first field trials insights into the bioturbation, constipation, bridge construction and air permeability. First, the composting process and the ideal process conditions that should prevail in the reactor were considered. On the one hand moist air is used to escape the heat and on the other hand to supply the compost with fresh air. Several potential problems such as bioturbation, air permeability, corrosion, clogging and bridge were incorporated in the concept. Considering the design of the reactor it has become apparent that the condensate must be fed back into the reactor again, otherwise the moisture content of the compost would decline sharply. A separator had to be built in, which exchanges the air as the oxygen content decreases and carbon dioxide arises. The heat exchangers were designed roughly. It is essential that the surfaces must be very large due to the small differences in temperature and the low heat transfer coefficient. The reactor does not require a ventilator since through the stack-effect sufficient pressure differential exists to obtain a natural draft. For the experimental reactor all drawings and parts lists are included in order to build the reactor and perform a variety of tests. The experimental reactor was designed in a way that it can be fabricated by little resources. Results from this concept are that per kg dry matter rotted material around 4.8 * 10 6 in the form of heated water can escape in 4 weeks.
