Abstract:

plan a project, which combines the fields of architecture and structural engineering in terms of interdisciplinary planning. The choice fell on a timber structure for redensification of domestic architecture. Due to a constant growth of population in the city of Vienna there is a big need of residential buildings, which should be realized through sustainable densification. The sites and buildings of retail stores are often located in areas in the suburbs, where a higher building densitiy could be possible. In order to capitalize on the inner-city potential and the symbiosis between retail and residential buildings, the project involves a residential building, which is built over an existing retail store in the 22nd district of Vienna and consist of a timber construction. It‘s aim is to increase and use the possible building density of the property. The building shall meet the criterias of sustainable architecutre by providing varible floorprints, social infrastructure and using ecological building materials. Therefore the building is planned with a timber construction. The conditions of the property and the existing building result in larger spans, which are solved with a studwork out of laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The structure of the design is calculated using a 3d-model in the software RFEM. Due to the three-dimensional modeling, the course of forces in the complex structure can be well represented and understood. Due to the use of a floor construction with a lightweight packed bed and a dry screed on the one hand and the lightweight construction consistently carried out on the other hand, the loads are drastically reduced, resulting in slim wood sections of the truss. The ceiling system consists of a box girder element made out of LVL. The calculation of the ceiling system was carried out in a subsystem. Because of the large spans, the verification of the vibration of the ceiling elements is decisive for the design. Rigid links are used for the dimensioning and the modelling of one of the knots of the studwork. Therefore it is possible to display the forces in the connection. One of the knots with large forces is constructed and dimensioned in order to check the feasibility of the design. The project shows that with the structural system of a studwork made out of LVL in combination with consistend lightweight construction, the large spans can be constructed down to the detail. Furthermore, the complexity of the project demonstrates the necessity of interdisciplinary planning and coordination of the two fields of architecture and civil engineering from the beginning on in the planning process.
