In the middle of the 18th century, the architecture of the imperial menagerie with its baroque themed gardens had a big impact when it came to the presentation of the emperor’s animal collection. Some centuries later, the private menageries became public animal zoos. Due to this change, the architecture had to be renewed. It brought several challenges when it came to getting rid of cages and adapting the zoological atmosphere into real nature. The expectations of the visitors needed to be fulfilled. Alongside the airports, train stations and sports stadiums, animal zoos and aquariums are one of the most visited public places. Nevertheless, the knowledge of zooidal architecture is weak. In addition to planning a mixture of stage design, exhibition and prison construction, the architect has the further task of studying the habitat and the behavior of the animals. “Schönbrunn Zoo” which is located in Vienna, prioritizes keeping the zoological constructions up to date. During the last decade the obligation of building a winter garden for the giraffes was discussed and settled down. With the interest of creating my own project and the help of the “Schönbrunn Zoo” I decided to write my degree dissertation on it. The thematic priority is staging the savanna with its natural climate in a compact structural body. A sustainable plan concept and an economical modification without changing the glass house are also part of this thesis.
