Abstract:
(1) Patrick J. Water and architecture have an odd relationship. On the one hand architecture should provide protection from the weather and on the other hand architecture must provide a supply of water.(1) A challenge for architects is to compose where water is needed and desired or not. Water, which occurs in many different forms in nature and both influences and inspires architecture, is the topic of this architectural thesis. The thesis also explores the health and economic benefits of the architectural use of water, from saving energy to improving air quality: In winter, one can save energy costs since humid air feels warmer than dry air. Humid air has positive health effects.(2) Water elements can minimize smell and purify the air.(3) Hotels, shops, medical practices, restaurants and fitness centers like to decorate with water to give their clients a sense of well-being. In Christa Illera's opinion, optical, acoustical and tactile experiences with water are rarely used. Water offers a lot of qualities like reflections, a range of colours and the effect of movement. The research is applied in an urban design project involving water to improve an existing public space in metropolitan Vienna. "Waterlink" makes the connection between water and architecture clear. New experiences can be achieved by the use of water elements in architectural designs. (1) Patrick J.
