Abstract:

The center of Vöcklabruck becomes more and more deserted. The number of empty and therefore unused groundfloors increases. As the trade vanishes also visitors are disappearing. However, Vöcklabruck isn't the only city whose center is dying out and thus it serves as an example of a large number of austrian cities. The first part of this work deals with the historical and current significance of the city center. On one hand the focus is based on the question: Why are inner cities desolate? On the other hand the advantages and disadvantages of already proven methods for urban revitalization of selected examples are being determined. The second part provides an insight into the town of Vöcklabruck and after a brief analysis of the historical development follows a detailed description of the current situation with its weaknesses and potentials. With the help of theoretical analysis the third part - the urban design project - shows site-specific solutions on different scales. The aim is to restore the city center´s life quality and vitality by a mix of working, living, recreation, leisure as well as culture and subsequently to increase the identification of the inhabitants with the city.
