The present thesis is about stationary elder care. A brief overview about the architectural history of this function accomplishes more clarity about the temporary developments. The main focus is on studies of the proper usage of light, color, materials and gardens. The general question arises how such a social institution has to be designed. The architectural competition for the new building of the elder care and nursing home of Lambach in Upper Austria will be used as an example. The building site, belonging to the social care union of Wels-Land, is situated in between the housing area in the east of the center of Lambach. The existing building of 1983 should be removed. The reason is the strict building structure which makes an adaptation of today-s necessities impossible. To avoid any interruptions of living and working in the existing nursing care home a solution of contemporaneous building phases will be suggested. There will be living space for 120 partly dement people who need nursing. By offering single bed rooms with private baths, the intimacy should be preserved. Moreover social integration will be supported by commonly used living and dining rooms. The design of gardens and therapy spaces enables an individual caring. Working there is facilitated by the specific use of materials and short paths. Other public functions should be situated in the building and used by inhabitants of the village. This avoids that the elderly become lonely and it helps to bring more action into the house.
