Revive Bad Gastein

Abstract

Bad Gastein, der einstige Nobelkurort, welcher immer öfter nur noch im Zusammenhang mit Wintersportarten genannt wird, fällt vor allem durch seine ungewöhnliche Lage am Fuß eines Bergmassivs auf. Seine extreme Topografie, an einem beinahe schluchtartigen Steilhang, wird durch den Wasserfall, welcher mitten durch den Ort donnert, noch zusätzlich verstärkt. Die prachtvolle Architektur des Ortes aus vergangenen Epochen bildet zusammen mit den Gewässern Bad Gasteins und seiner steilen Landschaft eine unverwechselbare Kulisse in der Alpenwelt. Doch das Zentrum Bad Gasteins liegt seit nunmehr als einem Jahrzehnt im Dornröschenschlaf. Über dem alten Ortskern liegt ein morbider Charme. Die einst mondänen Hotelbauten der "Belle & Époque" im Herzen Bad Gasteins stehen leer und verfallen langsam. Rund um das alte Zentrum entwickelt sich eine neue Form des Tourismus, welche junge urbane Gäste aus ganz Europa anzieht. Die neue Gästeschicht will die Mischung aus natürlichem Alpenraum und der komfortablen Infrastruktur einer Stadt erleben. Obgleich der Ort durch seine zahlreichen Ressourcen eine spannende urbane Kleinstadt inmitten der Alpen bildet, sieht die Zukunft des historischen Ortskerns eher trüb aus. Die nachfolgende Arbeit befasst sich mit dieser Entwicklung. Genauer behandelt werden die Geschichte Bad Gasteins, die natürlichen und gewachsenen Ressourcen des Ortes, sowie die Entwicklung des alpinen Raumes in der Gesellschaft und der sich daraus ergebenden Veränderungen im Tourismus. Die Entwicklung einer ganzheitlichen Tourismusund Raumstrategie, welche sich vor allem auf die Destination Bad Gastein als solche bezieht, steht im Fokus. Anhand dieser entsteht ein neuartiges Konzept zur Bespielung des Raumes. Die leerstehenden Bauten im Zentrum werden nicht einfach abgerissen und ersetzt. Vielmehr wird der Raum durch gezieltes Eingreifen an markanten Stellen neu erschlossen und der Bestand durch fehlende Strukturen ergänzt. Durch die veränderten Gegebenheiten im Zentrum, werden die verlassenen Hotels für Junghoteliers wieder interessant und eine Kettenreaktion ausgelöst, welche zum Ziel hat das Herz Bad Gasteins wieder zum Schlagen zu bringen.

Bad Gastein, a former noble spa resort which is nowadays better known for its winter sports possibilities, is especially remarkable for its unusual location at the foot of a mountain. The extreme topography of the region becomes more intensified for the spectator because of the waterfall. This spectacle of nature searches for its path through the middle of the town. The architecture of Bad Gastein surrounded by massives and the different waters shine like icons of bygone eras in the eyes of the beholder. However, the center of the historic mining town seems to slumber for more than ten years. The once glamorous hotels built in the 'Belle & Époque' remain vacant and are slowly falling apart. While the old center seems to fall apart a new form of tourism has developed, which attracts young urban visitors from all over Europe. This new specific type of guests is searching for the great mix between natural legacy of the alpine region and the comfort only provided by the infrastructure of an urban city. Although Bad Gastein can be seen as a small town, not only because of its valuable resources, reality is currently still looking very grim. The following project deals in greater detail with this sorrowful developement. Especially the history of Bad Gastein, the natural and originated structure of the mountain town, as well as the modification of the alpine regions status in society and the implications for the tourism market. Developing a location planning and tourism strategy which in particular affects the destination Bad Gastein is the main focus of this paper. The purposes of this is to generate a new concept in order to create a suspenseful new sense of space. The buildings which are left abandoned cannot just be torn down to be replaced afterwards. It is much more about dealing with this matter and intervening. The building stock is complemented absentee structures. Young hotel keepers will respond to the changed circumstances in the inner-town area and the deserted houses will become interesting objects again. This way the heart of Bad Gastein will start beating again.
