Fadzullah, U. H. (2016). Implementing patterns and designs in seam lines to create aesthetic impression to tensile membrane structures [Master Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2016.28667
The popularity of building tensile membrane structure has increased the construction field globally. The lightweight membrane material which is supported minimal structural works makes it a preferred choice in the modern age. Using tensile membrane technology, large span could be achieved by using the single layer material, odd and artistic forms are created due to the flexibility and the combination of its durability with low maintenance requirement, tensile membrane structure is becoming a firm favourite amongst end user. To produce the required final forms and shapes, the membrane has to be cut and joint or seamed. Using which ever seaming methods, a thicker, opaque floating lines in space will be visible to the user. These lines, which appears as straight lines, requires to be fabricated quickly and properly as it will have to reproduce 90% of the strength of the original material. Patterns and printings has been done on the membrane surface, as an additional to create a customised finishing to the membrane. Having an option to impose these customised finishing to the seam lines could provide more options to end users. Instead of having visible straight lines, a research on how customised artistic seams could impact the image of a membrane surface will need to be conducted.
