Investigation of the Dynamic Behavior in Drilling with Indexable Insert Drills and Influence of the Contact Energy on Surface Modification by Machine Hammer Peening

Abstract

The functional performance of indexable insert drills is highly related to the static and dynamic properties of the workpiece and the base drill body. Process instabilities may harm quality parameters such as the bore size or its shape. For this reason, it is favorable to analyze how the drilling tool reacts under specific conditions and gain insight into which effects may be expected on the final product. Machine hammer peening (MHP) is a mechanical surface treatment process that leads to increased hardness and induces compressive residual stresses in near-surface layers of the peened workpiece. These qualities may also cause structural transformation of the crystal lattice of the processed metal materials. The focus of this study is on the investigation and characterization of the dynamic behavior of indexable insert drilling tools and its impact on steel workpieces, as well as the influence of the machine hammer peening process on the near-surface material´s micro structure.
