The basis for my thesis is the internationally open architectural competition from June 2016 to design/develop the new Skamlingsbanken Visitor Center with a museum of local history and culture in the Kolding Municipality, Denmark. Parts of the call for tender, the development property, as well as functional and programmatic points have been adopted. The Skamlingsbanken area is a glacial moraine, a remnant of the last ice age. Over the past couple of years, it has also formed the backdrop for gatherings of all kinds that contributed to local history. The design/ plan has the ambition to enhance this feeling, to turn this place into an architectural attraction and a highly regarded symbol that embodies the region`s history and identity. The architectural character express the structure`s meaning and function. It conveys an open and progressive attitude that enables it to be put to different uses. The spectrum of perspectives and activities will secure a broad audience and revive the region. The Visitor Centre and museum shall become a vivid centre for the research into history and contemporary culture of the region. The unique Danish landscape is deeply anchored in the national tradition. The Visitor Centre tries to strengthen the rural infrastructure, to establish a clear relationship with the existing structures, and to create a new hub to communicate the deep relationship between the landscape and local culture. The draft/plan structures the view- and meeting point in a fundamentally new way and creates new hiking trails and paths throughout the region with the existing sculptures in mind. The unimposing architecture of the museum and Visitor Centre takes the surrounding landscape into account and is to be understood as a holistic concept with humanistic values in the foreground. The objective of my thesis is to let the dramatic, undeveloped and impressive landscape of Skamlingsbanken shine in a new light through bold, but simple architecture with a strong connection to the Scandinavian context.
