European cities are growing rapidly and their housing density is rising. Thus new concepts and solutions on how to deal with "space" will be needed in the future. The already extremely high density of Tokyo, Japan`s capital, shows "extreme" or "extraordinary" ways of living and building in small spaces. European architecture might be able to learn from some of Tokyo`s examples. How is ¿(living) space¿ defined in Japan and Austria (Europe)? Which differences can be found? By analysing 15 chosen mini-houses in Tokyo, the reasons for their appearance and peculiarities are listed. The main questions this thesis wants to answer are: > How and why did these mini-houses develop? Which peculiarities do they have?; Is there something Vienna can learn from Tokyo? Are there potential spaces to build a mini-house in the urban landscape of Vienna? The goal of this master thesis is to test an additional form of redensification for a "future"-Vienna. The result is a design, inspired by the mini-houses of the megacity Tokyo.
