Abstract:

This master thesis treats different issues of a bottom outlet. The special focus is directed on the layout design of the bottom outlet properly to different types of dams. Furthermore this subject is discussed in detail from the intake structure towards to energy dissipation. The hydraulic phenomena like cavitation, aeration and cross waves are going to be discussed in a separate chapter. For an efficient hydrodynamically design of the pressure tunnel is - beside the intake structure - also the transition of the pressure tunnel cross section to the gate chamber cross section particularly important, because this could result due to flow separation to a pressure drop and finally to cavitation generation. In order to prevent this detrimental flow conditions a sufficient aeration of the free flow tunnel section is necessary by means of an aeration pipe. Additionally devices (bottom and wall aerator) to prevent cavitation erosion damages on the tunnel lining can be installed by occurrence of low pressure conditions. By means of the gates the water discharge in the bottom outlet can be regulated. The gates are differentiated in sliding gates and roller gates. Both need seals and a gate guidance. To prevent gate vibrations a definite flow separation point has to be guaranteed by a rectangular bottom seal. The layout design of the bottom outlet influences the flow behaviour more or less significantly. In case of the existence of several gates in the gate chamber, disadvantageous flow conditions can occur during asymmetric gate operation conditions. In consequence chocking effects can disturb the regular flow behaviour and could finally cause damages on the tunnel lining. In order to protect the downstream river bed against massive erosion damages, the energy of the maximum discharge of the bottom outlet has to be dissipated properly. For this purpose, a stilling basin or a ski jump solution are appropriate. Finally it is stated that the dimension of a scour is influenced by the degree of the jet disintegration, the impact angle, the downstream depth and the river bed (fractured rock size) material.
