Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is the virtual reconstruction of the former synagogue in Teplitz in Northern Bohemia, which was erected in 1880 and set on fire by an anti-Semitic population in 1939. The study is part of an ongoing research program, which aims to establish a digital archive of synagogues, that were demolished during the 2nd World War. The computer-aided reconstructions disclose the vast cultural loss and simultaneously commemorates the historical value of the buildings, that used to be part of European cityscapes. The first part of the thesis is an inquiry into the history of Teplitz and the sociocultural development of its Jewish community. It provides a depiction of the circumstances that led to the building of the synagogue and a description of the temple‘s architecture. The emphasis of the thesis was laid on the computer-aided reconstruction of the synagogue using CAD- and Rendering Software, based on original plans and photographs, as well as postcards and textual descriptions of the temple. The results of the reconstruction are presented by photorealistic pictures and a virtual walk-through.
