Mush-room : Entwicklung und Entwurf eines Pavillons aus Pilzwerkstoff

Abstract

Myzel stellt biologisch gesehen das Fadengeflecht von Pilzen in der Erde dar. Wird es unter geeigneten Bedingungen mit einem Substrat und Wasser zusammengebracht, entsteht ein natürliches Material mit einer großen Spanne unterschiedlicher Charakteristika. Biologen, Industrial Designer und Materialwissenschaftler haben sich bereits mit dem Materialverhalten des myzel-basierten Kompositmaterials, kurz Pilzwerkstoff, auseinandergesetzt. In der Verpackungsindustrie, als Lederimitat oder in Form von Wärmedämmung hat dieses Material bereits Anwendungsbereiche gefunden. In der Architektur wurde es beispielsweise in Ziegelform am Hy-Fi Tower in New York umgesetzt, vor Kurzem diente es im Dutch Warehouse als Ausfachung in Holzgerüsten. Das gewachsene Material ähnelt in Dämmeigenschaften und Konsistenz Kunststoffen wie Polystyrol, ist jedoch im Gegensatz dazu zu 100% biologisch abbaubar. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich diese Arbeit zunächst der Grundlagenforschung des Pilzwerkstoffs. Basierend auf den resultierenden Erkenntnissen wird ein Verfahren entwickelt, das einen Entwurf eines biologisch abbaubaren, sprich temporären Pavillons zulässt. Das beinhaltet die Konstruktion, die empirische Untersuchung und die anschließende Rückführung der Ergebnisse in einen Entwurf. Dazu wird ein Prototyp im Maßstab 1:2 realisiert. Die digitale Simulation des Pilzwerkstoffs dient sowohl der Vorhersage, der Untersuchung als auch der Visualisierung des Wachstums. Ziel ist es, einen architektonischen Entwurf zu generieren, der Materialherstellung, Verfahren und architektonische Ausgestaltung in einem Projekt vereint.

Mycelium is the vegetative part of mushrooms. By adding substrate and water, a natural material with a wide range of characteristics is generated. Biologists, industrial designers and material scientist have already worked and experimented with the material behaviour of mycelium based composite materials. Its usage ranges from packaging and leather imitation to insulation. Even in architecture, there are some projects experimenting with this material. In 2014 the Hy-Fi tower used mycelium based bricks as its defining structure. This pioneer project was followed by a few others, including the recently completed pavilion of the Dutch Warehouse, where the mycelium based material served as infill in a wooden structure. The characteristics of the grown material are similar to common substances used for packaging and insulation such as polystyrene. But in comparison, the mycelium based composit material is a 100% biologically degradable. In this context the thesis is dedicated to the fundamental research of this composite material. In order to verify the theories, empiric experiments were conducted. Based on the results, a procedure to design a biologically degradable and thus temporary pavilion is being developed. This includes the construction and the execution of the pavilion, as well as an empirical analysis and the reimplementation of the conclusions which have been drawn into the original design. To evaluate the results, a prototype is being constructed in a scale of 1:2. Simultaneously, the digital simulation of the growing process of the material serves as important aspect for understanding and visualizing the material’s behavior. The main goal of this thesis is to develop an architectural proposal which aligns the production of the material, the procedure and the architectural aesthetics in one design.
