Wild, A. (2014). a.wild.work : Knochen zwischen Kunst und Konstruktion [Diploma Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2014.24610

The following work is about an open end examination about the applied ignorance on a material which is pretty untypical for the building and the creative industry. Up to now it also does not belong to my own basic materials. Indeed there are historical handling methods and applications but for some reasons it disappeared almost entirely from the range of re-usable materials. The opening question: "is it realy possible to build something out of bones?" changes during the whole process as much as the object itself. In this procedure the goal is not forcing to optimize the stability, to extend the endurance (durability) (life period) or an improvement of the industrial usability (utilization). It is much more about the search after some possible, undiscovered (hidden) but inherent characteristics (qualities). I start with some general Material study where the particular qualities of bones from different Species have been analyzed. In the End it was the lower leg of an Ostrich which seems because of his length and the continuous form as the perfect choice. After the hurdle of purchasing enough material the next big challenge was to prepare the bones for further handling as an regular raw construction material. The effort is made to combine the traditional knowledge with some new material and techniques. An "Trial and Error" Method leads to constant new working processes (manufacture processes) followed by an always different target. Over the period of working time a big change in the reactions of my social environment was noticeable. They respond to the way of construction as well as to the grade of abstraction. A primary negation converts into lively interest or over to starkly understanding while the extreme curiosity of others moves from indifference to a big disappointment. In the following pages the evolutionary history is documented and shows the first try of an extraordinary confrontation of usual designmethos with an unusual material. Based on the experiences of this work some more experimental series with more specific results will follow in the future.
