Abstract:

Localizing objects in indoor environments is the subject of recent scientific work. Most infrastructure-based indoor localization techniques require line-of-sight radio links or radio links that come close to line-of-sight conditions. Obstacles that block the line of sight near the infrastructure's access points decrease the localization accuracy. In realistic scenarios, such as localizing objects in storage halls or convenience stores, the line-of-sight is limited to aisles between shelves. To perform research on localization algorithms, data need to to be collected on many points coherently. Hence, a large amount of base stations is required. Reducing the cost of those base stations is a key factor for large scale data collection and for the development of such localization systems. A cost-efficient method for building base stations is making use of software defined radios. They feature general purpose radio chips which can be used as radio frontends for base stations. However, localization systems require a high level of synchronization that cannot be achieved out of the box by software defined radios in a straight-forward manner. Therefore, a method for synchronizing the base station is required. In this work, a synchronization method is developed that can align the data of the base stations with subsample accuracy. For this purpose, a printed circuit board is designed that allows for the exchange of all necessary signals between the base stations by the use of a single cable. A localization system will be proposed that is easily deployable, cost efficient and sufficiently scaleable for large scale data collection. Finally, a prototype of the localization system is built and the performance of the synchronization concept evaluated. Simulations have shown that the proposed system can align recordings up to 490 ps. However, the prototype suffered from issues of the software defined radio and reached an accuracy of 2.4 ns.
