Abstract:
In the context of this thesis, important parameters for the crystallization behaviour of a zinc sulphate and ferrous sulphate containing solution are investigated. The solution emerges in a pickling process, where zinc-coated steel scrap is de-zincified with sulphuric acid. Regeneration is necessary to recover zinc and regenerate the spent pickling solution. This should preferably be done by cooling crystallization. Following already existing processes for the regeneration of sulphuric acid based steel pickling solutions through crystallization, the process will be structured as follows: Initially, the spent pickling solution is mixed with sulphuric acid, reducing the solubility of ZnSO4 and FeSO4. Next, the precipitation of zinc sulphate heptahydrate takes place by reducing the temperature in a crystallizer. Finally, the regenerated acid is fed back to the pickling process and crystalline zinc sulphate can be converted into metallic zinc in a zinc smelting plant. In particular, there is a need to examine the possibility of gaining pure zinc sulphate by crystallization (e.g. by fractional crystallization) in addition to under which process conditions - and especially at which temperature - possible crystallization is taking place. This is necessary because zinc, which is higher in concentration than iron, should primarily be retained from the solution. The first step was to search existing literature data on the quaternary system ZnSO4 - FeSO4 - H2SO4 - H2O, with the focus on crystallization data at low temperatures. Furthermore, phase equilibria were calculated with the Extended UNIQUAC model. The validation of the model results with literature data and lab experiments was with good accordance, thus it was further used to investigate and describe the crystallization process. Additionally to model calculations, batch crystallization with model solutions and continuous crystallization with process solutions has taken place. The aim of the batch experiments was to prove both the model and experimental procedure, as well as to gain first results on co-crystallization in laboratory scale. Moreover, by doing continuous crystallization also important parameters (e.g. kinetic data) for an industrial crystallization process were investigated. Hence it becomes apparent that a selective crystallization of zinc sulphate is not possible. That means for co-crystallization of zinc and ferrous sulphate, that mixed crystals based on zinc sulphate are formed.
