Abstract:
This Essay is an attempt to study the maximal load capability of transformers in dependance of water diffusion in different insulation liquids types. Some basics about transformers will be reminded, transformer’s types, the cooling-system, insulation, etc. The behavior of temperature in the windings and its impact on the life expectancy of the transformer will be explained. The processes leading to water diffusion back and forth between paper and oil, and its consequences on dielectric strength will be shown. Following models were implemented on Matlab® to give accurate and in current information about the state of transformers : • Two thermal models for step load and for continuously variable load. • A Diffusion model based on Fick’s Diffusion equations, giving the mean square distance di↵used in/out of the paper. • A model to compute the relative saturation of the oil. The parameters needed in these models can all be obtained by transformers manufacturer, so that these models can be used. In this study, a 40/53/60MVA,ONAN/ONAF/ONAF,(225,26.4kV,YNd1) transformer was used for the simulation. Maximal loading capability of transformers is obtained and method for simulation of moisture propagation is developed. This study also enabled to show how specific load patterns of behavior can affect the moisture diffusion in specific insulation liquids and thus reduce the maximal load time of the transformer. This model could help to fill in blanks in in overload capability simulators that do not take into account the influence on moisture migration by some specific load profiles.
