Abstract:

There is a major challenge in the designing of a diesel exhaust system using the method of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Due to the high initial temperature (200°C) require d by the SCR catalyst, the arrangement of the diesel exhaust system should take place as close as possible to the engine. The difference with the short mixing zone is the difficulty in achieving a proper concentration and distribution of the urea-water-solution (UWS). In regard to the ideal uniform distribution of the ammonia at the inlet of the SCR catalyst, an exhaust system is not efficient enough in this arrangement without a mixer element. The mixing can be positively influenced by different injectors, as well as changes in mixer geometry. At the same time, the dosage of UWS must consider the forming of deposits in the exhaust system. Particularly involved are the mixing element, as well as the urea injector. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of different injectors and mixer geometries on the uniform distribution of ammonia and the spread of deposits. The deposits mechanism of formation and the growth rate of the deposits played an especially important role in the determining factors.
