Abstract:
Intensive research and development towards photonic integration has been driven by the ever increasing data trac requirements in optical ber networks and the subsequent data processing in the optical domain. Particularly, those photonic platforms based on silicon have arisen as extremely attractive due to their compatibility with already established and well-known CMOS fabrication processes, hence intended to reect the technological evolution achieved in electronics during the last 50 years. Furthermore, the range of applications has extended recently from optical communications to other elds, such as biophotonics and molecular sensing, which are continuously gaining importance in the last years. Thus, a signicant research tendency may be observed towards new photonic materials compatible with the generic platforms already established within the last decade. On the other hand, novel photonic systems and applications with a high level of complexity are constantly emerging, which require of a very precise control of the phase characteristics. Accordingly, dispersion management has revealed essential to accomplish complex and advanced applications in the next generation, thus oering new possibilities and perspectives towards optical signal processing. Hence, this master thesis deals with the specic design of an integrated Mach- Zehnder interferometer (MZI) intended to determine the dispersion characteristics of a photonic waveguide, as well as the subsequent characterization thereof. Particularly, the integrated interferometer is implemented in an emerging silicon nitride photonic platform, which is compatible with CMOS technology and suited for biophotonic applications in the very near-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, namely in the wavelength range comprised between 800 and 900 [nm]. For that purpose, a deep study of the waveguiding phenomena and the working principles behind the diverse devices comprising the interferometer have been performed in the frame of this thesis. Additionally, proper design and subsequent characterization of dedicated multimode interference (MMI) couplers, i.e. photonic basic building blocks to accomplish broadband splitter and combiner functionalities, have been addressed in this work. In conclusion, the waveguide dispersion has been accurately characterized by means of an integrated interferometer specically conceived for that purpose, which exhibits broadband and high performance thanks to the extremely high quality of the designed MMI couplers.
