Abstract:

Studying at an Austrian university essentially means attending courses and taking the respective exams. Towards the end of a study the students write a thesis and the study is concluded with the graduation. The primary task of a Campus Management System (CaMS) is to provide support for these aforementioned processes. The huge workload required for the administration of courses and exams can be reduced drastically by using a CaMS, which establishes standardized processes for the whole university and offers self-service functions for students and staff. Graduations on the other hand are less standardized and require a more involved approach for every student depending on the applicable curriculum, the individual areas of concentration and the duration of the study. It is therefore quite complicated to implement the complete graduation processes in software. The primary goal of the STAB project is the design and development of a software system, which is capable of managing all graduation processes for all studies at the Vienna University of Technology. As a first step requirements for a software supporting the graduation processes are collected. Based on these requirements possible options for the implementation are presented and assessed. Considering the general requirements, the organizational structures and the current IT environment at the university the development of a software prototype is the most viable option. The prototype offers functions for students to register for graduations and for staff to perform the graduations processes. Following the successful rollout at one faculty of the university, the new software is promoted at all the other faculties. Additional requirements and suggestions are gathered to extend and adapt the prototype for university-wide use. Based on the experiences gained by using the prototype for numerous real graduations the integration of all the graduation functions in the new CaMS TISS is planned. The actual implementation will follow when the TISS project plan permits it. This diploma thesis addresses the topic of graduations for studies offered by the Vienna University of Technology and the different options for the development of a software to support the associated processes. The prototype developed as part of the STAB project is presented as an example for the successful implementation of such a software. Statistical data on the number of graduations handled with STAB over the last semesters underlines the success. The thesis describes methods and tools used for the development of the prototype as well as the steps taken to introduce the new software at the various faculties. Using a bottom-up strategy new standardized processes for graduations have been established effectively within an organization with scattered decisionmaking processes. This thesis ends with the design and planning of the complete integration of all the new graduation functions in TISS.
