Abstract:
The company HELIOVIS AG is developing a new kind of solar concentrator in cooperation with Vienna University of Technology. The new solar concentrator consists of thin polymeric foils. The mechanical stability is achieved by applying internal pressure. The selfsupporting and lightweight design in combination with the low cost of the PPC (Pneumatic Prestressed Concentrator) is the main idea behind this approach. This thesis deals with the development of PPC calculation models. With the help of these models, the PPC geometry can be evaluated. By the improvement of the PPC geometry, the aperture could be increased by more than 33 %, while the height and cost of the PPC would remain largely the same. The polymer films used are mostly commercial products. They are used in architecture or as truck tarpaulins. Only the mirror film has been especially developed for use on the PPC. The material properties and behaviour of different polymerfilms are tested using test cylinders. The evaluation of the test results for the ETFE shows a nonlinear viscoelastic material behaviour. During operation the carrier film and the mirror film display an almost linear elastic material behaviour. Extrapolating the results over a time frame of about 27 years, the ETFE shows an elongation of about 3.7 %, and the carrier film shows an elongation of about 0.8 %. In order to achieve high optical efficiency in operation, the PPC must be produced under precise conditions. Therefore this thesis contains a standardized manufacturing concept for PPCs. The PPC prototypes produced by this production concept will then be tested in pilot plants. The largest PPC prototype has been installed in Spain with a mirror area of approximately 200 m2. The mirror film was coated with aluminium as a reflective layer (reflectivity approx. 70 %). Using a HTF circuit (thermal oil) a thermal efficiency of 43 % could be measured. The experimentally determined values show good agreement with the calculated values. Through the use of the newly developed silver coated mirror film (reflectivity approx. 90 %) and the use of a secondary concentrator, thermal efficiency of 61 % can be achieved. Considering the aforementioned findings, the study provides the basic information for the manufacturing of a PPC pre-series, for use in a demonstration power plant. A cost-benefit analysis of such a solar thermal plant (aperture: 4 m) gives an amortisation period of around 10 years. The next planned stage of development on the PPC is an upscale to an aperture of 8m.
