Abstract:

Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) is a process for severe plastic deformation of materials. ECAP influences the properties of the material with the aim of being able to use these new ECAP materials in new field of application. This plastic deformation has a strong effect in the mechanical properties of the four materials titanium (CP-Ti Grade 2), titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), copper (Cu-ETP) and aluminium (EN AW-6082). In the ECAP process metallic materials are pressed under high pressure through a die with a precisely defined channel shape. The essential characteristic of this channel is the deflection angle, the angle between the inlet and the outlet channel. The smaller this angle, the stronger the plastic deformation. The transformation of the samples examined in this work was carried out at angles between 90 and 120 degrees. In order to achieve the desired structure, the process has been repeated several times. As a result, the grain sized decreases further and further. The impact of ECAP on the materials titanium (CP-Ti Grade 2), titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), copper (Cu-ETP) and aluminium (EN AW-6082) is to be investigated. The behaviour of the unexplored ECAP materials was investigated during the drilling process compared to the untreated materials. Because hardly any information exists about the machinability of these new materials, it is necessary to re-evaluate them. For this reason, drilling tests were carried out for all four materials, in the untreated state as well as in the ECAP-treated state. For the analysis of the effects by ECAP, defined areas of cutting parameters are traversed, depending on the material, and the results are then compared. For the cutting parameters, on the one hand, ecommendations from the machine manufacturer and, on the other hand, data from a literature research were used. The comparison criteria are the feed force and torque, the surface quality of the drill hole, the wear of the cutting edge as well as the chip pattern.
