Abstract:
Induction machines tend to be used as traction motors for local railway transport. These machines are increasingly facing challenges due to the power density. In this thesis the optimization of the cooling concepts of air cooled, closed and thermal highly stressed traction induction motors with the target conflict between the electromagnetic and thermal design are being observed with the aim of achieving higher power and torque density of the traction motors by improving the cooling concepts. The core topic is the design of the induction machine lamination. It is crucial that the cooling hole arrangement is thermally and electromagnetically optimized. First of all, an overview of the foundations and underlying conditions for lamination design is given. Secondly, a multi-physics calculation method which aims at the calculation and comparison of various cooling hole geometries is being presented. Then, several calculations are conducted with different cooling hole geometries in order to an optimal cooling hole geometry and arrangement. The fluid mechanics calculations are done by analytic methods, the thermal and electromagnetic calculations are done by numerical methods (finite element simulations). To verify the theoretical assumptions, a test motor with optimized lamination has been built and evaluated. Subsequently, the exceedingly positive results and their significance for the motor design are being discussed. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the materials utilized in the active part of the induction motor. The focus is on the electrical sheets and the properties of respective materials at elevated temperatures. The measurements will be presented and the influence of temperature dependent material properties on the operation of the traction motors is being discussed. In the case of air cooled, closed and thermal highly stressed traction induction motors, elevated temperatures appear on the motor surface. This PhD thesis investigates the influence of radiation and natural convection on the cooling behaviour of the machine. Additionally, extensive measurements are being conducted. The potting of the stator winding overhang with a thermally well conducting material improves the thermal behaviour of certain kinds of electric motors. The use of the winding overhang potting for traction induction motors are subject to further investigation.
