Abstract:
Lightweight design is one of the key elements in automotive engineering, as it allows the development of efficient and agile vehicles. Over the last years fibre-reinforced plastics such as CFRP or GFRP have become increasingly important not only in high-performance cars, but also in large serial production applications. Due to the high potential of mass reduction, a lot of application possibilities are provided especially within components belonging to the unsprung mass. Within this thesis different linkage concepts of a torsion crank rear axle are developed. The independent features of each concept are compared objectively in a value benefit analysis. The combination of the highest-rated features eventually leads to a rear axle concept, which not only solves the problems of the already existing first development, but also assures a permanent connection between the individual parts. Finally a hypothetical study answers the question, of to which degree cost-restricting conditions influence the utilization of mass reduction potential. Although the newly developed axle may not reduce weight in relation to the original design, its total mass still is considerably lower than comparable rear axles made out of metal materials. The results of the concluding study impressively show the feasible weight saving potential achievable by a consistent application of lightweight design methods and the prospects of future developments implementing fibre-reinforced plastics.
