Abstract:
There is a high risk of injury that can occur with falls on a via ferrata. Rope brakes are used in addition to ordinary carabiners to minimize the drop height. At the moment rope brakes and carabiners are only realized in separate devices. The integration of a rope brake into an ordinary carabiner is called a safety carabiner. It is protected by the patent AT 519353 B1. The Institute of Engineering Design and Product Development of the TU Wien is assigned by the holder of this patent to carry out the product development for this device. This master thesis describes the workflow of the product development process, which follows the guidelines of VDI 2221. These guidelines manage the systematic approach to the development of technical products. This systematic product development includes the definition of specifications in a list of requirements. Based on this list, suitable concepts are generated. In the next step of the development process these concepts are transferred into a 3D-CAD-model. In this prototype, the rope brake is implemented as a clamping device and is integrated in the back part of the carabiner. The clamping device consists of two asymmetric clamp edges interacting with the safety rope of the via ferrata. The positioning of these clamp edges allows for the safety carabiner to be moved in a climbing direction. If a fall were to occur, the clamp edges will prevent downward movements due to the lever of the acting forces. The 3D-CAD-construction of the prototype represents the end of this master thesis and can be seen as the basis for further product development.
