Abstract:

This work is intended to give an estimation of the operating performance of a PPC. The considerations were carried out experimentally as well as numerically. For this purpose, the thermal and optical behavior of a one stage and a two stage PPC system was quantified. In the scope of a DSG pilot plant, equipped with a one stage PPC prototype with 1.5m aperture width, the measured value of the optical efficiency was in the range of 0.2. The operation at 320 C could demonstrate the durability of the PPC foil body at reasonable DSG conditions. The wind speed dependency of the optical behavior of a one stage PPC with 3m aperture width and a Schott PTRR 70 receiver was investigated by 3D ray tracing on the ground of wind tunnel measurements. The focus on this investigation was the influence of the wind protection elements on the first, third and fourth row of a PPC array field. The results show, that the first row loses approximately three quarters of its performance. The resulting wind force on the support structure was also numerically identified at a wind speed of 130 km/h. The numerical simulation of a 1 MW(el) power plant at the location of Sarroca de Lleida (North region of Spain) gives an outlook of the annual yield and the start-up behavior of the PPC solar field. Three different plant configurations were investigated, one with saturated steam, one with superheated steam, and one with thermooil as HTF. The PPC, again, has an aperture width of 3m with the Schott PTRR 70 receiver. The best overall efficiency of the solar field at approx. 0.43 could be identified for the configuration with the superheated HTF. The heat losses of a one stage PPC with 6m aperture width showed a slightly favorable characteristic compared to the SkyTrough R collector. A numerical comparison could prove, that the PPC collector has approx. 1.7% less heat losses than the SkyTrough R . A worst case scenario (no wind, 390 C HTF temperature and 45 C ambient temperature) could not identify any critical temperatures for the transparent foil next to the receiver. Finally, an estimation of the optical efficiency of a non-evacuated and an evacuated two stage PPC with an aperture width of 8m and Schott PTRR 90 receiver was given. The shape of the secondary concentrator was determined by 2D ray tracing and an optimization routine with genetic algorithms. A value of 0.627 for the non-evacuated receiver and 0.596 for the evacuated receiver could be found.
