Abstract:
For the description of the behavior of a petrol engine fuel when knocking combustion occurs, the standardized procedure uses octane rating scales for categorization. DIN standards stipulate the rules for determining both RON and MON ratings of a fuel and the definitions for the CFR engine which has to be used for it. The conceptually similar BASF engine, whose standards have been withdrawn in the meantime, was also used in round robin tests until about 20 years ago, in which it could slightly gain advantages regarding precision. By analyzing the differing design features and by comparative measurements of different fuels, the objective was to identify differences in the manner of determining knocking combustion and the combustion process between the two engines. Additionally, series of measurements were taken with several different parameter variations in order to examine the behavior of the BASF knock-detection unit. Measurements revealed that the examined BASF engine mainly could not produce valid octane rating results. Therefore, recommendations are made how to improve the BASF engines precision up to the standardized level.
