Abstract:
The main objective of this master thesis was to develop a radio frequency measurements based estimation method for determining the fiber grain angle in wooden boards. Therefore, a key focus of the work was on the analysis of the transmission of electromagnetic waves through anisotropic media, e.g. a wooden board. The work examined these two issues based on simulations and calculations. Thus, a mathematical model for wooden boards in the numerical computing environment MATLAB was created. Since the calculation of the transmission of electromagnetic waves through an anisotropic material and taking into account the effects of multi-reflection is too complex using classical ray optics, the so-called Berreman method was selected to elegantly achieve this objective. Based on the mathematical model of the wooden boards and using the optimization tools integrated in Matlab, a method to estimate the direction of the grain was developed. Here the transmissions matrixes calculated by using the mathematical wooden board model were used. In the course of this thesis it is demonstrated that it is possible to determine the direction of the grain using the developed estimation method almost exactly. Furthermore, the influence of noise and systematic errors of the measurement system, e.g. antenna errors, have been considered. Further analysis of the transmission of electromagnetic waves through the wooden boards demonstrates that multi-reflection inside the measurement object, the wooden board, influences the grain angle estimation. Nevertheless, within the thesis is was derived that this influence can be neglected beyond a certain board thickness.
